I have a few books on the subject of log cabin building and though I'm not planning on building one at the present in the future I would like to try it. This book is technical and has very practical and sound advice yet to me isn't fun, and in my own opinion building a log cabin should be a fun experience. Now if you are building a log cabin to be your primary and only residence this book is a great and sobering guide. If you are building one as a small getaway or vacation spot then this book will probably scare you away from it. My own idea of a log cabin is a bit rustic with the whole "roughing it" atmosphere. This log cabin guide makes you think long and hard about how many receptacles and light fixtures you might want and how big the great room should be.
I'm not knocking the book, the guy knows his stuff, but again, this book applies the knowledge of stick framing with logs instead of siding or brick. And I'm not trying to diminish the fact that log walls must be treated and cared for differently and that log homes settle and check much more than a stick frame home, but after reading this book I was a little worried about putting a new door on my shed. If the pioneers read this book the west may never have been settled...
Post Script..After posting this review I reread the book and will take away a bit of the harshness, but still stick to my 3 stars. An example of what I'm talking about is a section on paying the bills( and paying on time). Is it prudent and important to pay you mortgage on time? Absolutely. If you want to keep contractors should you pay them in a timely fashion? Again..absolutely. Do most people who can afford to have a rather large custom log home built really need to worry about paying a second mortgage? Probably not in most cases.
I'll say it again, my personal idea was a small place that I build with my family in my spare time, not a place that should probably be designed by an architect. Again, the author gets into smaller cabins but I believe that this book is geared more towards the large, upscale home. Nothing wrong with that, it just wasn't what I was looking to do.

I am just starting to get into log building. After much research at the library, I came across this manual. I must say it is the most concise and easy to understand manual I have seen to date. The wealth of information made me purchase this manual for my personal reference library. I fully intend to undertake building a log home for my wife using the procedures that are clearly outlined in this manual. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about log building.
