Definition of Flood Insurance from Mortgage Glossary

Flood Insurance

An insurance policy that covers property damage due to natural flooding.

Flood insurance may be required on properties in a flood zone - the land bordering a stream which is subject to floods of about equal frequency; for example, a strip of the flood plain subject to flooding more often that once but not as frequently as twice in a century.

Flood Insurance is available from the federal government under the National Flood Insurance Program but is sold by licensed insurance agents. Flood coverage is excluded under homeowners policies and many commercial property policies.
